The “Open Schools” program in an innovative initiative implemented by the City of Athens, which has already been embraced by the local communities. Schools open to the communities and the society at large!
School buildings become meeting points for the community and host educational, technological, cultural and sports activities for children and adults – that is, for all ages.
What are “Open Schools”
School buildings and school yards remain open, with security services, from the final school bell until 9:30pm during weekdays, and from 10:00am until 20:00 during weekends. The programme supports security and cleaning services, in order to avoid any interference with the morning functionality of the school buildings. “Open Schools” was piloted in 2015.
This year, thanks to the exclusive donation of Stavros Niarchos Foundation, 25 schools remain open Monday – Sunday in the different areas of Athens. The aim is that schools will become meeting points for everyone: students of the school itself, as well as the school communities surrounding it, students’ parents and locals.
Aims of the “Open Schools” program
- The enrichment of the offered activities for creative learning, alternative education and entertainment for children, which will be offered in the safe environment of their school.
- The creation of a pleasant, purpose-built, shared space which students and adults will be able to meet, study, work and build their capacities together with other people.
- The ability for the adults to meet other adults, to enjoy themselves, learn and organise activities for themselves (ie. language courses, seminars, meetings) and with their children (ie. festivals, labs).
- Offer a variety of activities and services, based on the needs and abilities of the local community.
Part of the program DSH-Positive Choices will be implemented in the next two months (May-June 2017) in two schools. SSP&MH will run 4 workshops with young people and one workshop for parents and teachers (per school)
The aim is to run the DSH-Positive Choices programme in full for 10 schools in Athens (September 2017 to May 2018)
